Port of Arendal: Southern Norway’s Maritime Gateway
Located on Norway’s southern coast, the Port of Arendal serves as one of the country’s most important regional ports. The port facilities are spread across several locations, with Eydehavn acting as the main deep-water terminal for larger vessels and international cargo operations. Situated directly on the Skagerrak, the port offers easy access to shipping routes linking Norway with Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the wider North Sea region.
For ferry travellers, Eydehavn is particularly interesting because it provides ample space for ro-ro operations, vehicle handling and future passenger facilities. The area has a long industrial and maritime history and remains an important logistics hub for southern Norway. The proposed Njordic Ferry Lines connection to Eemshaven would operate from this part of the port.
One of Arendal’s strengths is its location. The city lies in the Agder region between Kristiansand and Oslo, making it a convenient gateway to southern Norway. Kristiansand can be reached in approximately one hour by car, while Oslo is around three and a half hours away. The nearby E18 motorway provides direct access to much of southern Norway and connects the region with Sweden.
Although the ferry terminal itself is located in Eydehavn, travellers will find the city centre of Arendal just a short drive away. Known for its waterfront, historic wooden buildings and vibrant summer atmosphere, Arendal is one of the most popular coastal towns in southern Norway. Visitors arriving by ferry can quickly continue their journey towards the Norwegian fjords, Telemark, Oslo or the many islands and coastal communities that characterise the Skagerrak coastline.
Today, the Port of Arendal combines modern maritime infrastructure with a strategic location on one of Scandinavia’s busiest sea corridors. With deep-water facilities, excellent road connections and room for future expansion, the port is well positioned to become an important gateway between Norway and mainland Europe.
